This blog post discusses how a blog is not just for teenagers and college kids for expressing themselves online, but can also be used by professors and academics to show their classes, research, etc with an audience. It is also a way for professors to be more approachable to students because they are working with something that college students are familiar with. I also like how he discusses treating a blog like a published paper or academia-related item to make professors more comfortable with it. It shows the flexibility of a blog and how it can be used.
This website showed that it is important to discuss yourself on your website and also provides a link to important projects you were part of. Each one can add to your digital portfolio and can be easily accessed by someone who is new to you and your work. It also shows your various interests without having a separate page or paragraph detailing all the projects and research you have been a part of.
This post is similar to the first one I reviewed. It says that an online presence is not, and should not be, unprofessional. We now live in a digital world, and in academia, people need to adapt to it. While this post doesn’t directly reference academia, I think it is appropriate for the field. I like that the author states tips on how to start creating your online presence. I especially like her tip on comments, saying that it can be the first thing that pops up when someone looks up your name. So, “write your comment like you would write your blog.” While a simple and common-sense tip, most people do not think about it. Commenting on someone else’s work is not a space to hide behind; it’s much like leaving an edit or comment on a paper. You said those things, and it represents you and your online identity.

I am not sure if this link is old and the original site has shut down; however, I still learned from the new site. It speaks to the idea of not being afraid when you need to ask for help. If you do not know how to start your online presence, go to someone who does to make sure you are doing yourself justice. It will teach you more than just clicking around a website builder and hoping for the best (like I tried to do until I came to my senses, aka almost threw my computer away, and then went to the DKC). I can be hard, but in the end, it is rewarding, and you can understand your own website better and have an amazing end product.
This site is unique in that is mixes business and personal. It is a photographer who posts his photos as well as blogs about his personal life. I think that this can give a more robust view of someone online, getting to know the personal and professional without having separate blogs. However, I think that the downside to this is that someone can get lost in your personal when trying to find the professional. I like the idea of having two blogs rather than combine them. I think if you share the two on the same site, you need to have different language for each topic to make it clear where the line is and show that you can adapt to different settings.
